Drmike  > Wreck diving > USS Lagarto exp., Thailand- Jul 05
USS Lagarto lost since the war and its location and cause of sinking unknown. Jamie found her in May 05 This was the first trip to her and first pictures. We took some relatives of Lagarto crew on board who did a memorial service over the wreck. These are the 1st pics taken of the Lagarto since she was lost. We managed to identify how (and where) she sank answering questions that have been unknown since the war.
Subsequently Jamie was invited to the US to attend a memorial service by relatives and worked with the US Navy on putting US Navy divers on the wreck for a formal ID later.
She is at 78m upright and intact. Some light trawler damage but for and aft guns still in place, as is the compass base (top probably pulled off by nets)

It was discovered that she sunk with all hatches closed and one torpedo tube open. A compression in her side just forward of the conning tower suggests she circum to a depth charge.

Drmike > UPDATE: Gulf of Thailand (June 16, 2006) - A plaque placed on the aft capstan of the wreckage in the Gulf of Thailand believed to be that of World War II submarine USS Lagarto (SS 371) is seen in this screen grab of video. Divers from USS Salvor (ARS 52) conducted six-days of diving to positively identify USS Lagarto as part of the Thailand phase of the exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, or CARAT. Divers will send photographs and video of the submarine to the Naval Historical Center in Washington for further analysis. CARAT is an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and six Southeast Asia nations designed to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.
